Key takeaways
- The requirement is 2,000 hours on the standard route or 1,500 concentrated, and both totals continue unchanged under the 2027 requirements.
- Restricted activities are direct implementation, essentially technician work. Unrestricted activities are analyst work: assessment, program design, data analysis, and parent and staff training.
- Technicians most often stall because their day job is almost entirely restricted activity, so they reach a high total with the wrong balance.
- The fix is negotiating program drafting, assessments and parent training into your role rather than accruing hours and hoping.
- The supervision agreement must be signed before hours start accruing. Hours worked beforehand are usually not recoverable, and this is one of the most common ways candidates lose work.
- Sign verification forms monthly without exception and keep your own copies. BCBA turnover is high, and unverified months are difficult or impossible to recover.
- At the 160-hour monthly cap, 2,000 hours is about thirteen months of pure full-time accrual. Eighteen months to three years is normal.
Coursework has a syllabus. The exam has a date. Fieldwork has neither, which is why it is where most BCBA candidates lose time, and occasionally lose hours they have already worked.
It is also changing. The BACB's 2027 requirements take effect on 1 January 2027, and the way fieldwork is tracked changes with them.
The two routes
| Route | Total hours | Supervision |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised fieldwork | 2,000 | 5% of hours in each period |
| Concentrated supervised fieldwork | 1,500 | A higher percentage |
Both survive into 2027 with the hour totals unchanged. The concentrated route trades more frequent supervision for 500 fewer hours, which suits someone whose employer supervises generously. The standard route suits someone accruing hours in a setting where supervision is harder to schedule.
You are not locked in permanently, but switching mid-way complicates your record keeping, so choose deliberately at the start rather than drifting.
What changes in 2027
Tracking moves from contact-focused to duration-focused. The emphasis shifts toward how long supervision lasted rather than how many contacts occurred. Practically, this means your documentation needs to capture duration accurately from the start.
Monthly accrual caps at 160 hours. You cannot compress fieldwork by working extraordinary months. At the cap, 2,000 hours is a little over twelve months of full-time accrual, and most people take considerably longer because they are also working and studying.
Concentrated supervision percentage changes. If you are on that route, check the new figure against your current arrangement rather than assuming it carries over.
Two eligibility pathways survive. A degree from an accredited or recognized program, or behavior-analytic coursework. Others are retired. This affects eligibility rather than fieldwork directly, and it is the change most likely to disrupt a plan already in motion.
Apply before 1 January 2027 meeting current requirements and nothing changes for you. If you are close, that is worth calculating precisely.
Restricted and unrestricted activities
The distinction that catches people out, because you can accrue plenty of hours and still be short.
Restricted activities are direct implementation, essentially the work an RBT does. Unrestricted activities are the analyst work: assessment, program design, data analysis, parent and staff training, supervision of others.
A majority of your hours must be unrestricted. This matters enormously if you are accruing hours while employed as a technician, because your day job is almost entirely restricted activity. Technicians frequently reach a large hour total and discover the balance is wrong.
The fix is to negotiate unrestricted work into your role explicitly, and early. Ask to write program drafts, run assessments under supervision, take on parent training, and help supervise newer technicians. Most supervisors will agree if asked, and very few will offer unprompted.
Who can supervise you
A qualified BCBA meeting the BACB's supervisor requirements, which include their own supervision training and ongoing obligations.
The relationship needs a signed contract before hours start counting. Not after, not retroactively. Hours worked before the agreement is in place generally do not count, and this is one of the most common ways people lose work they have already done.
Documentation, which is where hours actually get lost
The BACB provides monthly and final verification forms, updated for 2027. Use the current version.
The failure mode is predictable and worth stating bluntly: a supervisor who leaves, taking unsigned months with them. Turnover in this field is high, including among BCBAs. If you have three months of unsigned forms and your supervisor moves on, recovering those signatures ranges from awkward to impossible.
So: sign monthly, every month, without exception. Keep your own copies rather than relying on an employer's system, because if you leave that employer you may lose access. Record the restricted and unrestricted split as you go rather than reconstructing it later.
This is administrative and dull and it is the single highest-value habit on this path.
Finding supervision at all
The real bottleneck. Providers vary enormously, and this should shape where you work.
Employer-provided supervision is the common route and the best when it is genuine. Free, integrated into the job, and the supervisor knows your clients. The question is whether it is scheduled inside paid time or expected on your own.
Paid external supervision exists where an employer will not supervise. It costs money and it is sometimes the only option, but consider whether an employer who will not support your development is the right employer at all.
Questions worth asking before accepting any role, well before you need the answer:
- Do you supervise fieldwork, and is it inside paid hours?
- How many people are accruing here now, and how many have certified in the past two years?
- Will I get unrestricted activities, or only direct implementation?
- If my supervisor leaves, who takes over, and how do you handle continuity of documentation?
That second question is the most revealing. A provider who has certified nobody in two years is not supervising in a way that gets people through.
How long it realistically takes
At the 160-hour monthly cap, 2,000 hours is around thirteen months of pure full-time accrual. Almost nobody achieves that, because fieldwork usually runs alongside a job and a master's.
Eighteen months to three years is the normal range. The variable is rarely effort. It is whether your role gives you unrestricted hours and whether supervision is scheduled reliably, which is why choosing the employer matters more than choosing the route.
The wider path, including coursework and the exam, is covered in RBT to BCaBA to BCBA. If you want to work somewhere that supervises properly, send us your details and we will tell you which providers in your market actually do.
Common questions
How many supervised fieldwork hours do you need for BCBA?
2,000 hours on the standard supervised fieldwork route, or 1,500 on the concentrated route which requires a higher supervision percentage. Both totals continue unchanged under the 2027 requirements.
What is the difference between restricted and unrestricted hours?
Restricted activities are direct implementation, essentially the work a technician does. Unrestricted activities are analyst work: assessment, program design, data analysis, parent and staff training, and supervising others. A majority of your hours must be unrestricted.
Why do technicians accruing hours often fall short?
Because a technician's day job is almost entirely restricted activity. People reach a high total and find the unrestricted balance is wrong. The fix is negotiating program drafting, assessments and parent training into your role early rather than late.
What changes for fieldwork in 2027?
Tracking becomes duration-focused rather than contact-focused, monthly accrual caps at 160 hours, and the concentrated route's supervision percentage changes. Hour totals stay the same. Applying before 1 January 2027 under current rules keeps you on those rules.
Do hours count before a supervision contract is signed?
Generally no. The signed agreement must be in place before hours start accruing, and hours worked beforehand are usually not recoverable. This is one of the most common ways candidates lose work they have already done.
What happens if my supervisor leaves?
Any months without signed verification forms become difficult or impossible to recover, and BCBA turnover is high. Sign monthly without exception, keep your own copies rather than relying on an employer system, and ask before accepting a role how the provider handles continuity if a supervisor departs.
How long does BCBA fieldwork take?
At the 160-hour monthly cap, 2,000 hours is roughly thirteen months of pure full-time accrual, which almost nobody achieves alongside a job and a degree. Eighteen months to three years is normal, and the deciding factor is usually whether your role provides unrestricted hours.
