RBT resume templates
Download an RBT resume sample in Word or PDF, then replace the names, dates, availability and job details with your own. Keep anything you claim easy to explain in an interview.
Key takeaways
- You can get an RBT job with no experience. It is an entry level role by design, and many providers hire technicians working toward certification and train them through it.
- A strong RBT resume sample should show certification status, availability, location, reliability, documentation and experience with children or care routines.
- The experience that transfers: childcare, camp work, special education paraprofessional roles, retail, hospitality, caregiving including for family, and coaching or tutoring.
- Coaching translates particularly well, because breaking a skill into steps and reinforcing progress is the work.
- Show behavior rather than duties. Include a number wherever one exists, name the ages or group size, and say explicitly when you followed a plan written by someone else and kept records.
- Put your availability near the top. Most delivery happens weekday afternoons and evenings, and that block is the hardest for providers to staff.
- One page, plain formatting without columns or graphics, saved as a PDF, because tracking systems mangle decorative layouts.
Behavior technician is an entry level role. No degree, no clinical background, and providers hire people with none of either every week.
So the problem with a first RBT resume is almost never a lack of experience. It is that the experience is described in language the person reading it does not use.
Who reads it, and what they want
Frequently a BCBA rather than a recruiter, and often quickly. They are checking three things:
- Can this person be relied on to turn up, on time, consistently
- Will they stay calm when a child is not
- Can they follow a written protocol without improvising
Everything on the page should serve one of those. Anything that does not is taking up space.
Translating what you already have
Most people applying for their first RBT role have done work that maps directly, and describe it in a way that hides the connection.
| What you did | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|
| Childcare, nannying, camp counselor | Managing behavior, working with parents, safety awareness |
| Special education paraprofessional or aide | The closest possible match. Lead with it. |
| Retail or hospitality | De-escalation with upset people, consistency under pressure, reliability |
| Caregiving, including for family | Personal care, patience, sustained responsibility |
| Coaching or tutoring | Breaking a skill into steps, tracking progress, reinforcement |
| Any job with a cash drawer or checklist | Accuracy and following a procedure exactly |
Coaching and tutoring deserve special mention because task analysis and shaping are what good coaching already is, without the terminology. If you have taught anyone a skill in steps and adjusted based on how they did, say so in those words.
Write bullets that show behavior, not duties
The single biggest improvement available. Compare:
Weak: "Responsible for supervising children at an after-school program."
Better: "Supervised a group of 14 children aged 5 to 11, including two with autism. Followed individual behavior plans set by the program lead and kept daily written records of incidents and progress."
The second says the same thing and answers all three of the reader's questions. Numbers, ages, whether you followed someone else's plan, and whether you documented.
Two habits worth adopting: include a number wherever one exists, and say when you followed a plan someone else wrote rather than using your own judgment. That second point sounds like it undersells you. It is exactly what an RBT role requires.
What to put at the top
A short summary, three lines at most, that states where you are.
Behavior technician working toward RBT certification, with three years supporting children in an after-school program including two with autism. Available weekday afternoons and evenings across north Atlanta. Reliable, comfortable with documentation, and looking for a provider that supervises well.
That answers availability, location and certification status before the reader has to look for them, and those are the three things that decide whether you get a call.
RBT resume sample for someone with no experience
A simple one-page RBT resume works better than a designed template. Use sections in this order:
- Name, phone, city and email
- Three-line summary with certification status, availability and location
- Certification and training
- Relevant skills
- Work, volunteer or school experience
- Education
Here is the shape:
Summary
Entry level behavior technician candidate completing RBT certification, with two years of childcare and tutoring experience. Comfortable following written plans, documenting behavior, and working weekday afternoons across metro Atlanta.Certification
RBT 40-hour training completed August 2026. Competency assessment scheduled. CPR and first aid current.Skills
Child supervision, de-escalation, written documentation, parent communication, task breakdown, reliable transportation, data entry.
The exact wording should be honest. Do not claim RBT certification until the BACB has issued it, but do make in-progress training easy to see.
Resume for RBT roles: the format that works
The best RBT resume format is a plain one-page document with the highest-value information near the top. Start with certification status, availability, location and transferable experience. Then use bullets that show what you actually did with children, clients, families, records or written procedures.
Avoid columns, graphics, ratings bars and long summaries. Many providers use applicant tracking systems, and a simple resume for RBT roles is easier for both the software and the clinical reader to scan.
The certification and availability sections
Put both near the top rather than at the bottom.
Certification. If certified, list the credential and date. If in progress, say where you are precisely: "40-hour training completed August 2026, competency assessment scheduled." If you have not started, say you are ready to begin and would like employer-provided training. Many Georgia providers run their own and hire through it.
Availability. Be specific and honest. Most delivery happens between three and seven on weekdays, and that block is the hardest to staff. If you can cover it, it is the most valuable line on your resume. State your travel radius too.
Also list: CPR or first aid, any crisis training such as Safety Care or CPI, a driver's license and reliable transport, and languages other than English, which are genuinely in demand.
How to list RBT certification on a resume
If you are certified, put it in a separate certification section near the top:
Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), Behavior Analyst Certification Board, active since August 2026
If you are not certified yet, say the step you have completed:
RBT 40-hour training completed, competency assessment scheduled
If you are applying before training, use plain language:
Seeking an entry level behavior technician role with employer-supported RBT training
That wording helps the employer route you correctly. It also keeps the resume from making a credential claim that is not true yet.
RBT resume skills to list
Pick the skills you can defend in an interview. Good first RBT resume skills include:
- Following written behavior plans
- Taking accurate notes or data
- Staying calm during conflict
- Working with children or teens
- Parent or caregiver communication
- Task analysis, tutoring or coaching
- Reliable attendance and transportation
- CPR, first aid, CPI or Safety Care where applicable
- Comfort with after-school or evening availability
Do not overload the list with ABA terms you cannot explain. A BCBA would rather see honest transferable skills than jargon.
RBT resume bullet examples
Use bullets that prove reliability, documentation and calm behavior support. Examples:
- Supervised 14 children ages 5 to 11 during after-school programming while following written safety and behavior expectations.
- Documented incidents, parent notes and daily progress in a shared log for program staff.
- Supported two children with autism during transitions, group activities and snack routines.
- Tutored elementary students by breaking reading and math tasks into smaller steps and reinforcing completed work.
- Handled customer complaints in a high-volume retail role while following company de-escalation procedures.
- Maintained consistent attendance for early morning and evening shifts across six months of part-time work.
- Provided personal care for a family member, including routine tracking, appointment reminders and written notes.
- Coached youth sports by teaching skills step by step and adjusting prompts based on each player's response.
What to leave off
An objective statement that says you are seeking a challenging position. Every unrelated job going back a decade, unless it shows a pattern of staying. Personal details that have no bearing. Anything you cannot speak about confidently in an interview.
And do not claim familiarity with techniques you have only read about. It surfaces in the interview, usually within one follow-up question.
RBT resume length and file format
One page. Plain formatting, no columns or graphics, because many providers run resumes through a tracking system that can mangle anything decorative.
Save as PDF unless asked otherwise, and name the file with your own name rather than "resume final v3".
The shortcut most people miss
For this role, a resume matters less than for almost any other clinical job, because what actually determines whether you get hired is availability, reliability and whether you can start.
Which means applying directly to providers who run their own 40-hour training is frequently more effective than perfecting a document. They are hiring for attributes a resume struggles to convey and they will train the rest.
If you would rather skip the document entirely, our application form captures the same information as fields, including availability and certification status, and you can attach a resume only if you have one.
Common questions
Can I get an RBT job with no experience?
Yes. It is an entry level role by design, requiring no degree and no clinical background, and many providers hire technicians working toward certification and train them through it.
What experience counts for an RBT resume?
Childcare, camp work, special education paraprofessional roles, retail and hospitality, caregiving including for family, and coaching or tutoring. Coaching translates particularly well, since breaking a skill into steps and adjusting based on performance is what the work already involves.
How do I write RBT resume bullets?
Show behavior rather than duties. Include a number wherever one exists, name the ages or group size, and say explicitly when you followed a plan written by someone else and kept records. Following another person's protocol is precisely what the role requires.
Should I put my availability on my resume?
Yes, near the top. Most ABA delivery happens weekday afternoons and evenings, and that block is the hardest for providers to staff. If you can cover it, it is likely the most valuable line on the page.
How long should an RBT resume be?
One page, plain formatting without columns or graphics, saved as a PDF. Many providers use tracking systems that mangle decorative layouts.
What is the best RBT resume format?
The best format is a plain one-page resume with certification status, availability, location, relevant skills, experience bullets and education. Put the most important hiring details near the top.
Do I need a resume to apply for RBT roles?
Often not. Availability, reliability and how soon you can start matter more, and several providers hire directly into their own training. Applying to those providers is frequently more effective than perfecting the document.
Can I download an RBT resume template?
Yes. This page includes two editable Word samples and two PDF samples: one for an entry level applicant and one for a certified RBT.
